Rheda and Robert Wanstreet Scholarship Fund

Rheda Cavanagh Wanstreet was a lifelong teacher whose love for children spilled over into abundant charity for many others in need throughout her life.

Long past retirement from teaching and well after the death of her husband, Robert, Rheda worked as a tireless volunteer and lay minister for the people of St. James the Apostle Church in McDonough, her dog Brigid often at her side. She delivered Meals on Wheels, brought Communion to the sick at Henry Hospital, Sacred Journey Hospice and at nursing homes and private residences, and was a trusted counselor and friend. She supported those charities and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home with financial contributions.

Those who were close to Rheda spoke of her great humility. “She was a role model for all of us on how to live our lives as Christians,” said Meg Atkinson, Parish Life Coordinator at St. James the Apostle Parish.

Through her work with our Director of Gift Planning, Diane Duquette, Rheda was able to make plans to continue her work beyond her lifetime by creating a legacy at The Catholic Foundation. “Rheda Wanstreet was not only a pillar of St. James church in McDonough, she was a legend,” said Diane Duquette, Director of Gift Planning. “Her Catholic legacy will continue.”

Appropriate to her career, The Rheda and Robert Wanstreet Endowment Fund will provide scholarships for students at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School.
