Morgan Makley’s Legacy

Morgan W. Makley III Endowed Scholarship Fund

Cathy and Morgan Makley sent their sons to St. John Neumann Regional Catholic School (SJNRCS) to receive a faith-based education, but in the face of adversity, they received another gift: a second family.

An injury in high school prevented Morgan from pursuing athletics in college, but he poured his enthusiasm for sports into coaching his boys and their Catholic Metro League of Atlanta (CMLA) basketball teams at SJNRCS.

In 2020, the Makleys’ lives were turned upside down when Morgan was diagnosed with cancer, but they were not alone. The SJNRCS community came together and stepped up as an “unfailing” support system to the family, Cathy said. After two years, Morgan sadly lost his life to the cancer. In their time of grief, the Makleys looked to their faith. “I can’t imagine how we would have gotten through Morgan’s illness and passing without that bedrock to stand on. We felt (and continue to feel) God’s presence guiding us and sustaining us every day,” Cathy said.

Cathy was aware of the Catholic Foundation through her parish. Wanting to honor Morgan’s legacy and express gratitude to SJNRCS for its charity, Cathy established the Morgan W. Makley III Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund provides scholarships to help families involved in St. John Neumann’s athletic program offset the cost of tuition for a male or female basketball athlete to attend the school.

Cathy remembers Morgan as a leader and protector. “He worked hard his whole life to take care of everyone around him and didn’t always have an easy path, so it was important to him to help others,” she said. In the same way, the scholarship fund allows the Makleys’ to reciprocate the generosity they once benefited from.
