Helping Catholics Make

a Lasting Difference.

Monsignor Richard Lopez

April 28, 2023 was the 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood for Msgr. Richard Lopez. In honor of the occasion, St. Pius X Catholic School reached out to their alumni via an email newsletter. They asked alumni to submit messages or stories to share with Msgr. Lopez, a longtime teacher at St. Pius, and provided the link to donate to the Monsignor Richard Lopez Scholarship, which was established in 1998 in honor of Msgr. Lopez by friends and former students on the 25th anniversary of his Ordination. The fund provides scholarships to students in their junior year who exemplify the values of hard work, caring, and respect for life. Thirty donations were made to the fund to continue Msgr. Lopez’s legacy of Catholic education.

Paul and Melinda Krarup Endowment Fund

Paul and Melinda Krarup were longtime parishioners at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch. While Paul was in training to become a deacon, Melinda, known as Lin, was diagnosed with brain cancer. She encouraged him to continue to pursue his studies, and Paul was ordained on February 2, 2013. A few months later in July, Lin’s body succumbed to the disease and she passed away.

Deacon Paul wanted to create a Catholic legacy to provide for his son, his church, and other organizations that were important to him. He met with a financial advisor and they decided the best way to accomplish this was to use Deacon Paul’s IRA to give to charity and create a life insurance policy to benefit his son.

“IRAs are a great vehicle for charitable giving because there are no taxes paid on the transfer,” explained Catholic Foundation President Nancy Coveny. “Taxes from IRAs can be a substantial amount for heirs, while an insurance policy payout is generally not taxable income.”

Deacon Paul worked with the Catholic Foundation to select the beneficiaries of the endowment fund he planned to create. He looked at the organizations he gave regularly to and wanted those organizations to continue to benefit from his gift in perpetuity. He made an initial gift in 2016 to create the Paul and Melinda Krarup Endowment Fund and made a planned gift through naming the endowment fund at the Catholic Foundation as the beneficiary of his IRA.

Deacon Paul passed away in May of 2022. The Krarups’ dedication to their faith and the legacy they created will allow the organizations to shine Christ’s light to others for generations to come.

Extending the Gift of Catholic Education

Father Paul Berny

In 2023, Father Paul Berny, a retired longtime priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, created the Berny Family Scholarship Fund to support scholarships for students in need at St. Joseph Catholic School in Marietta.

Growing up, Fr. Berny spent two decades in Catholic education. The name of the fund honors his siblings and parents, especially the latter who made sacrifices so that their children could all attend Catholic school. He understands its formational and academic opportunities, and he wanted to help make possible the same valuable experience for St. Joseph students.

In his more than 50 years as a priest, he spent 10 of them at St. Joseph’s. “It was the only assignment I had where I was the pastor and the parish had a school,” he said.

With a gift now, he established the fund so it could begin accepting donations and accruing interest. Fr. Berny owns three rental homes in Fayetteville, and upon his passing, the sale of the properties, in addition to his bank accounts, will go to the fund to provide distributions for scholarships.

Fr. Berny is well acquainted with the Catholic Foundation. “I had served on the Pastors Advisory Council in the past, early on when it started,” he said. He added that the Catholic Foundation “seemed to be the easiest” organization to partner with to execute his charitable giving.
